Writer's Block: The Beatles

The Village

In their heyday, The Beatles were the center of the pop universe. Many groups have been hailed as the next Beatles, but does pop music even have a center anymore? Who represents the core of pop music to you?

There will never be anybody like the Beatles again. No other band will have that level of influence over today's music for many years to come. Pop music is hard to classify. You've got the cheesy stuff that rots your teeth - former Steps fan typing this here - then there's the more genre crossing stuff like The Beatles. I have always loved the 1960s girl bands like Martha Reeve and the Vandellas (Dancing in the Street is my 2nd favourite song ever) and that sound is coming back with varying degrees of success (see Amy Winehouse, Duffy, The Pipettes, Adele). I don't think pop has a centre anymore because no other genre seems to have one today. So called pop artists are now crossing the borders of music, like Madonna (who I hate.) Music shouldn't take just one form, or be forced into one immovable shape. That's the joy of music.
